More than the price gap suggests, and this is where most comparisons underserve you by listing forty specs without saying which ones overlap.

Both have an AMOLED touchscreen with physical buttons, which is the upgrade that actually changed how these watches feel to use. Both run Garmin’s training stack: morning report, daily suggested workouts that adapt to recent performance and recovery, Garmin Coach adaptive plans, and race training plans. Both feed Garmin Connect, which is free and the most complete training platform any watch maker offers.

Garmin rates the 165 at up to 11 days smartwatch and 19 hours GPS. The 265 is rated slightly higher at 13 days and 20 hours. That is a real difference and a small one, and it will not decide a marathon.

So the honest framing is not entry-level versus serious. It is one watch with three additional hardware capabilities, and whether you need them is a question about where you run rather than how fast.

The Three Things You Are Actually Paying For

Multi-band GPS. The 265 receives two satellite frequency bands where the 165 receives one. When a signal bounces off a building before reaching your wrist, the bands distort differently and the watch can discard the reflection. Single-band watches cannot tell a bounced signal from a clean one. Between tall buildings and under heavy tree cover, that is the difference between splits you trust and splits you argue with. Barometric altimeter. The 265 measures elevation by air pressure. The 165 derives it from GPS, which is less precise on hills and trails. Road runners on flat ground will not care. Anyone chasing vert will.

The Awkward Comparison Neither Model Wins

Worth knowing before you spend $450 on the 265 specifically for GPS accuracy: cheaper watches from other brands already include dual-frequency reception. That does not make the 265 a bad watch. It makes the multi-band upgrade a weaker argument for staying inside Garmin than it first appears, because you are paying a $225 premium over the 165 for a feature available elsewhere for less than the 165 costs. The real reason to pay it is the Garmin ecosystem, which is genuine and which no competitor matches. Just be clear that is what you are buying.

Where Your Money Goes Further

The $225 gap between these two watches buys things that will affect your running more than either watch will.

How to Tell If You Actually Need Multi-Band

This is the one upgrade worth thinking hard about, because it is the only one that changes data quality rather than adding a metric. There is a free way to find out whether it applies to you.

Run your normal route with whatever GPS device you already own, including your phone, then look at the map afterwards. Does the track follow the road, or does it cut through buildings, jump across streets, and wander into the river? If the line is clean, single-band is fine for where you run and the 165 will serve you. If the line looks drunk, you have found a real reason to spend more.

Two environments produce that drunk line reliably. Urban canyons, meaning streets with tall buildings on both sides, where signals arrive after bouncing off glass and concrete. Dense tree cover, where the canopy scatters the signal before it reaches you. If neither describes your running, multi-band solves a problem you do not have.

Worth adding that GPS accuracy and heart rate accuracy are separate problems, and only one of them is fixed by spending more on a watch.
