WHOOP is cheaper in year one and more expensive from year two onward. The crossover happens early in the second year, and after that the gap widens by roughly $170 annually. If you keep a device for three years or more, Oura is meaningfully cheaper despite the larger upfront number.

Finger or Wrist: The Decision Nobody Frames Properly

This is the actual choice, and it is more consequential than the feature lists suggest.

The finger is a better optical site than the wrist. Arteries sit closer to the surface and there is less tendon movement to disturb the sensor. That is a large part of why smart rings perform respectably on overnight metrics despite being far smaller devices. It is also why Oura reduced the Ring 5 to 2 grams and 2.28mm thick without gutting its sensing.

The wrist tolerates a bigger sensor array and more battery. WHOOP uses that room for continuous strain tracking through the day and for its recovery model, and the 5.0 generation extended battery life substantially over the 4.0, which was one of the older device’s genuine weaknesses.

Practically: a ring is easier to sleep in and invisible at work, but it interferes with lifting, since a rigid band under a barbell is unpleasant and many people take it off for exactly the sessions they most want measured. Sleep versus wake detection is genuinely good across modern wearables. A 2024 validation study in Sensors, run at Brigham and Women’s Hospital against polysomnography, found sensitivity of 95 percent or higher for detecting sleep across the devices tested. If your device says you slept seven hours, that total is probably close.

Sleep staging is where it weakens. The same study found stage-level sensitivity ranging from roughly 50 to 86 percent depending on device and stage. Both devices sell the same promise: measure recovery, train accordingly, improve. Worth asking honestly whether you will actually do the second part.

The failure mode is identical on both platforms and it is common. You check the score in the morning, feel briefly good or vaguely guilty, and then train exactly as you were going to anyway.
