The Uncomfortable Part: The $199 Watch Has Better GPS

The PACE 3 has dual-frequency GPS. The FR265 does not. That is the single most surprising thing in this comparison and it runs directly against what the price tags imply.

Dual-frequency means the watch receives two satellite signal bands instead of one. When a signal bounces off a building or scatters through tree cover before reaching your wrist, the two bands distort differently, and the watch can use that discrepancy to identify and discard the reflection. Single-band watches have no way to distinguish a bounced signal from a clean one, which is why pace readings go strange between tall buildings and under dense canopy.

If you run in a city centre or on wooded trails, that is not a spec-sheet curiosity. It decides whether your splits are worth training from. If you run open roads and a track, you will likely never notice, and Garmin’s single-band positioning is perfectly accurate there. Battery goes the same direction. COROS rates the PACE 3 at 38 hours continuous GPS and up to 24 days of daily use. Garmin rates the FR265 at 20 hours GPS and up to 13 days. The cheaper watch lasts roughly twice as long on both measures.

So What Does $250 Actually Buy?

Three things, and they are real. Whether they are worth $250 depends entirely on you.

The screen. The FR265 has a bright AMOLED display. The PACE 3 uses a transflective panel, which reflects ambient light rather than generating its own. Transflective is always-on at near-zero power draw and gets more readable as sunlight brightens, which is why the COROS battery figures look the way they do. The ecosystem. This is the strongest argument for Garmin and the hardest to quantify. Garmin Connect is free, enormous, and integrates with nearly everything. The FR265 carries the full training stack: morning report, HRV status, training readiness, race widget, Garmin Coach adaptive plans, and daily suggested workouts that adjust after each run. COROS Training Hub is capable and considerably smaller, with fewer third-party hooks.

Music and payments. The Garmin stores music on-device and supports Garmin Pay. If you run without a phone and want either, that alone may settle it.

The Case for Saving the $250

A running watch does not make you faster. It measures. Once measurement is accurate, additional spending buys convenience and polish rather than better training, and the PACE 3 clears the accuracy bar comfortably.

At 30 grams with a nylon band and 11.7mm thick, it is also genuinely lighter and slimmer than the 46mm Garmin, which matters more than people expect on long runs and overnight wear for sleep tracking.

Then there is what $250 buys elsewhere. A quality chest strap, which fixes the accuracy problem neither wrist sensor solves. A pair of race shoes. Three or four race entries. Where Both Watches Are Equally Limited

Wrist optical heart rate is good at rest and steady efforts and degrades as intensity rises, on both watches, because it is the same underlying technology reading blood flow through a moving wrist. In the Stanford validation of seven wearables (Journal of Personalized Medicine, 2017), no device met the researchers’ 5 percent accuracy threshold for energy expenditure, with the most accurate off by more than 27 percent.

The practical consequence is identical whichever you buy: use the trend, not the absolute number, and if you train by heart rate zones, pair it with a chest strap. That is the real accuracy upgrade at either price point, and it costs about $100. Buy the Garmin Forerunner 265 if you already own Garmin gear, if you want music on your wrist without a phone, if adaptive coaching and daily suggested workouts are what will keep you training, or if the screen is what has kept you away from COROS. What Neither Watch Fixes

Both watches read heart rate optically from the wrist, and that technology has the same ceiling regardless of what you paid. Accuracy is good at rest and during steady efforts, then degrades as intensity rises, because your wrist is moving hard, tendons are shifting under the sensor, and heart rate is changing fast. Some watches lag. Some latch onto your cadence and report your step rate as your pulse.

That matters most for exactly the sessions where precision counts: intervals, threshold work, and anything where you make decisions from time-in-zone. The fix is the same for both watches and costs about $100.
