Read that and the pattern is hard to miss. The watch costing $163 less wins on GPS hardware, battery, and weight. Dual-Frequency GPS, and Why It Is the Real Gap

The PACE 4 receives two satellite frequency bands. The FR265 receives one. When a signal bounces off glass or concrete before reaching your wrist, the two bands distort differently, so a dual-frequency watch can identify the reflection and throw it out. A single-band watch has no way to tell a bounced signal from a clean one.

In practice that is the difference between splits you can train from and splits you argue with, and it only shows up in specific places: streets with tall buildings on both sides, and trails under heavy canopy. On open roads and a track you will never see it, and Garmin’s positioning is perfectly good there.

COROS rates the PACE 4 at 41 hours of continuous GPS and up to 19 days of daily use. Garmin rates the FR265 at 20 hours and 13 days. That is roughly double on the GPS figure.

For a marathon neither watch is at risk. The gap matters for ultras, multi-day efforts, and for the ordinary annoyance of charging. It is also worth knowing that COROS achieves this with a 32 gram watch that is 11.8mm thick, so you are not trading bulk for endurance, which is the usual bargain.

What Garmin Actually Sells You

Not specifications. The Forerunner 265 is worth $163 more than the PACE 4 for exactly one reason, and it is a good one: Garmin Connect and everything attached to it.

That means free access to the most complete training platform any watch maker runs, integrations with nearly every app and device in the category, morning report, HRV status, training readiness, Garmin Coach adaptive plans, and daily suggested workouts that adjust after each run. It also means on-device music and Garmin Pay, neither of which COROS matches.

Where Both Watches Hit the Same Wall

The Pattern Worth Noticing

Three comparisons on this site now put the Forerunner 265 against a cheaper watch, and it loses the specification argument every time. Polar’s Vantage M3 has dual-frequency GPS and offline maps. The COROS PACE 3 has dual-frequency GPS and better battery for $199. The PACE 4 has both plus an AMOLED screen for $279. That is not three flukes.

What it reflects is that hardware has commoditised. AMOLED panels, dual-band GPS chipsets and optical sensors are available to any manufacturer willing to buy them, so matching a competitor’s sensor list is now a sourcing decision rather than an engineering achievement. Software has not commoditised. Garmin spent two decades building Connect, the training algorithms inside it, and the integration web that lets your watch talk to everything else you own. That cannot be bought from a supplier.

So the honest framing is not cheap watch versus good watch. It is paying for sensors versus paying for software. If you want measurement, the cheaper watches win outright and it is not close.
