Enter a target weight and this works out exactly which plates go on each side, using the fewest plates your gym’s set allows. It accounts for bar weight and collars, and tells you plainly when a number cannot be loaded at all rather than quietly rounding it.
How the loading is worked out
The arithmetic itself is simple: subtract the bar and any collars from your target, then halve what remains, because plates go on both ends. The part worth doing properly is choosing which plates make up that number.
This calculator searches for the combination that uses the fewest plates your set can produce, rather than simply working down from the heaviest. Those are not always the same answer. If you want 60 lb per side, working greedily from the top gives 45 + 10 + 5, which is three plates. A 35 and a 25 gets you there in two, and if your gym stocks 35s the calculator will find that instead. Fewer plates means less handling and a tidier sleeve.
Why some weights cannot be loaded at all
This is the part most calculators handle badly. Plates come in fixed denominations, so the bar moves in steps. With a standard pound set the smallest plate is usually 2.5 lb, and because it goes on both ends the smallest change you can make to the bar is 5 lb. A target of 187 lb is not loadable. Neither is anything else that is not a multiple of 5 above the bar weight.
When that happens this tool says so and offers the closest loadable weight below and above, rather than rounding silently and letting you believe you lifted a number you did not. If your gym stocks 1.25 lb plates the step size halves to 2.5 lb, and microplates go finer still.
The same applies when a denomination runs out. If every 25 is already on someone else’s bar, some weights become unreachable even though they are arithmetically fine. Set the counts in the plates panel to match what is actually on the rack and the answer changes accordingly.
Bar weights are not always what you assume
The default here is 45 lb, the standard men’s Olympic bar, with 35 lb for a women’s bar and 15 lb for a technique bar. In kilos the equivalents are 20, 15 and 10.
Those are nominal figures. A competition-grade bar will be close to its stated weight. A budget bar on a commercial gym floor may not be, and specialty bars vary considerably — safety squat bars, trap bars and thick-handled bars can weigh anywhere from 45 to 75 lb depending on the model, and almost none of them are labelled. If precision matters to you, weigh the bar once on a decent scale and enter that as a custom value.
Collars count, sometimes a lot
Spring clips and plastic snap collars weigh a few ounces and are conventionally not counted — nobody calling out 225 is including their clips, so this calculator treats them as zero. Competition collars are a different matter: the pair adds 5 kg, roughly 11 lb, which is more than a pair of 5 lb plates. If you train in a competition setup and do not account for them, every number you record is off by that amount.
The selector handles both cases. Leave it on the default for ordinary gym equipment and switch to competition collars only if you are using the heavy locking kind.
What the number on the bar actually means
Calibrated competition plates are manufactured to tight tolerances. Ordinary commercial iron plates are not, and variance of a few percent per plate is common. Stack six of them on a bar and the error accumulates in whichever direction the batch happens to run.
In practice this matters less than it sounds, because the error is consistent within a gym. If you always train on the same plates, your progression is measured against itself and stays meaningful. It matters when you compare across gyms, or when you move from training plates to competition plates and find the bar feels different at the same stated weight.
Using this with percentage-based programming
Most programs prescribe loads as a percentage of your maximum, and percentages rarely land on loadable numbers. Eighty-two percent of 285 lb is 233.7, which no combination of plates will produce. Rounding to the nearest loadable weight is the normal answer, and which direction you round is a judgement call: down on volume days, up on a day you feel strong.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the calculator show plates for one side only?
Because that is how you load a bar. Every plate shown goes on both ends, so the total is the bar plus twice the plates listed.
What if my gym has an unusual plate set?
Change the counts in the plates panel. Set anything you do not have to zero, and reduce the counts on what is in short supply. The calculator only uses what you tell it exists.
Should I round percentages up or down?
Down is the safer default, particularly on higher-volume sets where the last few reps decide whether the session goes well. Rounding up occasionally on a top single is reasonable. What matters more is being consistent, so your logbook compares like with like.
Does the calculator handle kilos?
Yes, with the standard kilo plate denominations and 20, 15 and 10 kg bar options. The step size in kilos is finer, so fewer targets turn out to be unloadable.
Why does it sometimes use a heavier plate than I expected?
Because it optimises for the fewest plates rather than working down from the largest. If a result looks unusual, it is usually because a smaller combination of larger plates exists.
